Curriculum – First Grade
Religion - The children learn that God cares for them and that they are special.
They also learn about the church year and the feast days, prayers, liturgy, and sexuality.
Reading - The children learn to read. The emphasis is on vocabulary and comprehension. There are 6 reading books (3 primers and 3 readers).
Phonics - Sounds of letters and letter combination, and decoding words.
English- The children learn to listen, to express themselves orally, and to write sentences and stories using correct grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.
Spelling - Word patterns and high frequency words
Handwriting- Letter formation and word spacing.
Math - Counting and writing numbers, addition and subtraction, measurement of time and money, and geometrical shapes.
Science - The children learn about the growing and changing of people, plants, and animals. They also learn about the weather and the changes in seasons.
Social Studies - The children learn about their neighborhood, city and farm life, our flag and our country and maps.
Technology - Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum.
Music - Rhythm patterns and songs.
Art - Design, color, forms, and use of different art tools.
P.E. - The children learn to improve their physical performance.
Spanish - Students are exposed to pronunciation and familiarization with basic Spanish phrases.
